Knowing the Times is a brief publication that we plan to offer about once a month in a bulletin-insert format. Its purpose is to inform Christians of some religious and cultural current events that are significant developments, threats, or weaknesses that affect the Christian church.

The initial motivation for publishing Knowing the Times was that Bob Jones University stopped publishing their similar "What in the World" insert in May 2010. At the time, they wrote, "while readers are appreciative of the publication, it is not as useful to them as it was before the proliferation of information on the Internet." Herein lies a problem--there is so much information, it is hard to sort through it all, or even find it if you have access to the Internet. For those without Internet access it is even tougher. Occasional short snippets can be helpful to keep us on top of things and, in the words of the BJU publication, "be wise as serpents and harmless as doves."

The publication is free for personal or church use as long as it is not modified.

Knowing the Times is available on our church website here.

Last month, I finished the last requirement for the master of theology degree at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary. It took six years, with a lot of Greek and Hebrew. The DBTS Th.M. program was quite substantial, as it required 13 classes and the writing of a 70- to 100-page thesis.

My paper is entitled "How God Knows Counterfactuals." If you are interested in middle knowledge, Tiessen's and Ware's Calvinistic version of middle knowledge, Feinberg's soft determinist form of middle knowledge, or a compatibilist explanation of God's knowledge of counterfactuals, this paper should be of interest to you. It is available here.

If you don't understand what I just said, that's OK! This is a technical paper with a lot of philosophy and theology. Even so, there are some very important practical outworkings of this subject. Hope you enjoy reading it!

I have posted my review of Coming to Grips with Genesis on our church website. You can read the PDF here. There will also be a snippet of that review on amazon.com. The full review is to appear in the Detroit Baptist Seminary Journal, volume 14, 2009. Information on the journal is available here.
