Jean E. Balakovich, 85, went to be with the Lord on the morning of Saturday, May 31, 2008. She had been a resident of Sunrise Assisted Living Community in Ann Arbor since March 2008. She was born September 26, 1922 in Port Huron, MI, the daughter of Frank E. and Lillian E. (Knight) Westover. She married Peter Balakovich on February 4, 1961 in Flint MI, who preceded her in death. Also preceding in death were her brother Bruce (and Margerie) Westover and Vern (and Enda Mae) Westover. She is survived by her "adopted kids," Chuck and Joyce Cartwright and family, Becky Banks, and David Heidelberg. She is also survived by niece Judy and her husband Gary Walker and family, and nephew Dale and wife Joann Westover and family, and the children and grandchildren of Don and Mary Galley, the children and grandchildren of Helen and Wayne Ogg, Steve and Pat Balakovich and their family and Elsie and Jack Cary and their family. Jean had lived in Flint until 1961 when she moved with her husband to Ann Arbor. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor and Master degree in speech pathology. She worked for 26 years as a speech pathologist and retired in 1988 from Dundee Community Schools. She was a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARP), Christian Woman’s Organization, and was a member of Fellowship Bible Church. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Nie Family Funeral Home, Liberty Road Chapel, 3767 W. Liberty, Ann Arbor, MI 48103 (note this is not the Carpenter Rd. location; it is at the southwest corner of Liberty and Wagner on the west side of Ann Arbor). Visitation will continue on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Fellowship Bible Church, 2775 Bedford Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48104 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Fellowship Bible Church. A luncheon will be provided at noon after the memorial service, followed by the committal service at Washtenong Memorial Gardens at 2:00 p.m.

Mary E. Pine, 77, passed into the presence of the Lord on the morning of November 7, 2006. She had been a resident of Towsley Village at the Chelsea Retirement Community since 2002. Mary was born August 9, 1929 in Ann Arbor to the late Charles and Theresa (Mullhall) Pine. She graduated from Ann Arbor high school in 1946 and was employed by Illinois and Indiana Bell Telephone Companies before retiring from Michigan Bell in Ann Arbor in 1981 after 35 years. She was also a member of Fellowship Bible Church for 25 years where she was a Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, worked with Scripture Memory Fellowship and provided transportation to church for those that needed it. Mary also volunteered at the Veterans Hospital in Ann Arbor. Survivors include siblings Edward Pine of Ann Arbor, Helen Van Buren of Ann Arbor, Agnes (Cebert) Hughes of Lansing, Lillian (Donald) Weber of Saline, Shirley (William) Matt of Germfask, Brother-in-law Bob King and several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and siblings James Pine and Margaret King. A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. November 10 at Muehlig Funeral Chapel. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. A brief burial service will follow in Washtenong Memorial Gardens. A meal will follow at Fellowship Bible Church of Ann Arbor.

Ethel Pineiro [nee Halsey], age 91, passed away at the Methodist Retirement Community in Chelsea, Mich. on October 9, 2006. She was born on Oct. 10, 1914, in Wayne, Mich. She graduated from Clarkston High School in 1933, and later attended Pontiac Business Institute. She was employed by the University of Michigan for thirty six years. She married Roberto Pineiro on Oct. 4, 1952, and remained a resident of Ann Arbor through December, 2004. She is predeceased by a sister, Alice Halsey Miller, and survived by a sister, Reta [Halsey] Dodd, and two brothers, Samuel Payson Halsey and Donald M. Halsey, all of Davisburg. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces, her church family at Fellowship Bible Church in Ann Arbor, and Robin and Emily and all the other caring staff at the Chelsea Retirement Community. Ethel is remembered for her love, prayers, support and labors extended to the church and its missionaries. In particular, we remember the generous energy and tireless efforts she rendered on Communion evenings and to the annual Scripture Memory Fellowship program. Ethel was a supporter of numerous religious, municipal, state and national charities, and was an avid University of Michigan sports fan. She was especially fond of U-M baseball. Ethel was a friend of small animals, and enjoyed observing and feeding year round the numerous critters who regularly frequented her yard. She was a lifelong lover of cats and tenderly cared for several within her home before finally moving to the Retirement Community in January, 2005. Funeral arrangements are being handled through Generations Funeral and Cremation Services of 2360 E. Stadium Blvd, Ann Arbor. A funeral service will be held at Fellowship Bible Church, 2775 Bedford Rd, Ann Arbor, MI on Saturday, October 14 , 2006 at 1:00 pm. Viewing will be held from 12:00 noon until 1:00pm at the Church just prior to the service.

Mrs. Joyce Thomas, died Saturday August 19, 2006 at her home. She is survived by her husband Steve and two daughters Jada and Brittany. The funeral is Saturday August 26, 2006 in Chicago, and a memorial service is Monday, August 28, at 6pm at Second Baptist Church in Ann Arbor. Second Baptist is located at 850 Red Oak Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48103, (734) 663-9369. It is north of Miller Ave, east of Newport Rd, and west of N. Seventh.

Upcoming Events for the Fall, August 22, 2006

For the college and career singles group, there will be a multi-church Fall Fellowship on September 23, 2006 4-9 pm. It will be at 2140 Delano Rd, Oxford, MI 48371. There should be at least 75 college/singles there! Churches organizing and participating include InterCity Baptist Church of Allen Park, First Baptist Church of Troy, First Baptist Church of Lake Orion, First Baptist Church of Midland, Berean Baptist Church of Livonia.
All are welcome to our Biblical Creationism Conference, Nov. 30-Dec. 3, 2006 with Dr. Robert McCabe, Professor of Old Testament and Registrar at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. McCabe has a series of six messages on the issue of "origins" that he will present to us during the conference.

25th Anniversary Church Picnic, August 12, 2006

Fellowship Bible Church would like to invite its neighbors and friends to its 25th anniversary picnic on August 12, 2006 where you will be able to meet the new pastor. There will be activities for the children (and adults!) such as basketball, kickball, volleyball, etc. The picnic will start at noon.

Pastoral Installation Service, July 9, 2006

Fellowship Bible Church marked the calling of their second pastor, the Rev. Matthew A. Postiff, with an installation service on July 9, 2006 and a luncheon following. The Rev. Don Peterson from Grass Lake, Michigan officiated and give the charge to the congregation and to the pastor. Many friends and family attended this special occasion.

Mr. William Edward Beard, age 81, died Monday May 29, 2006 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI after a fall. He was born on January 18, 1925 in Clauson, Michigan, the son of Joseph and Sara Beard. On October 26, 1946, he married Anna Marie Palmieri and she survives. He worked as a carpenter with Herman Atkinson, Cecil Water and O’Neal Construction. He was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps., Marine 1st Division K35, for which he served in the South Pacific Seas during World War II. He was also a member Fellowship Bible Church in Ann Arbor and the 40 Diners. He enjoyed his family and doing carpentry work around the house. Survivors besides his wife of 60 years include three sons: Joseph (Janet) Beard, William (Sue) Beard, Jr. and Richard (Beth) Beard; grandchildren: Kelly, Frank (Jennifer), Chris (Sherri) Lisa (Joshua), Joseph, Scott (Lisa), Bryan, Kathryn, Matthew (Janea), Joseph, Stephen, Adam, Grace, and Elizabeth; great-grandchildren: Samantha, Joshua, Peyton and Parker; two brothers: Frank and Pete Beard; one sister: Maltha Allen. He was preceded in death by two grandsons: Bry Beard and Michael Beard; six brothers and sisters: Sara, Joseph, John, Artemisia, Rodman and Marshall. Memorial contributions in his memory can be made to Fellowship Bible Church. Envelopes will be available at Janowiak Funeral Home on Wednesday (May 31, 2006) where the family will receive friends from 5-8p.m. The funeral home is located at 320 N. Mr. John Peter Kornilakis, Ann Arbor, MI, Age 70, died Sunday April 23, 2006. Born May 13, 1935 in Athens, Greece, John Peter Kornilakis went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 23, 2006 following an extended battle with heart disease and diabetes. John loved to tell of his adventure in coming to the United States of America at the age of 21. In Ann Arbor, he met and married the love of his life, Shirley Jackson, and together they raised six children. A man of great faith, John was keenly aware of God's merciful leading and grace throughout his life. He will be missed for his quiet, loving, and peaceful spirit, his quick sense of humor, and famous cooking. He owned Old Town Restaurant in Ypsilanti's Depot Town and Omega Pizza in Ann Arbor over a span of 30 years. John was preceded in death by his father Peter Kornilakis, his mother Anastasia (Miahas) Kornilakis, and his sisters Katherine and Georgia. John is survived by his faithful wife Shirley, and by his six children, Suela Doan and husband Charles of Oklahoma, Thomas Kornilakis, Katherine Smith, Christina Kornilakis, Rachel Kornilakis and husband James Borck, and Naomi Postiff and husband Rev. Matthew Postiff, all of Ypsilanti. John is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Christopher and Angela Doan, Alexis Kornilakis, Christin Smith, Michael, Sydney, and Brandon Pope, Paragrine and Joshua Borck, and David and John Postiff. John and his wife were faithful and beloved attenders at Fellowship Bible Church in Ann Arbor. John clearly testified that he accepted God's gift of forgiveness and everlasting life through faith in Jesus Christ. As Proverbs 10:7 says, "the memory of the just is blessed." There will be a viewing at Fellowship Bible Church, 2775 Bedford Rd., Ann Arbor, MI, 48104 (734-971-2837) on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at 10:30am, followed by a funeral service at noon. A luncheon and committal service will follow.

Dr. Myung K. Yoon, San Diego, CA, Age 67, died Monday October 10, 2005. Born September 21, 1938 in Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Yoon graduated from Seoul National University Medical School, and upon graduation, served as a military physician lieutenant in the Korean National Air Force for five years. He arrived in the United States in 1967, and eventually settled in Ann Arbor, MI. Dr. Yoon was an Anesthesiologist at the University of Michigan Hospital, Veterans Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital for 36 years. He received a theology degree from the Michigan Theological Seminary in 1995. He devoted his free time during the last 15 years of his life to overseas medical missionary work. Dr. Yoon is survived by his wife, Sun Sook Yoon of 37 years; daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Tim Holloway; son, Michael Yoon; and daughter, Sandra Yoon.
